This site is now being hosted by Mosso.com and I'm loving it. I basically got a virtual dedicated server that is easily scalable for $11/mo! This means I can have an FTP server, an SVN server, and a web server with unlimited domains all for just $11/mo!
How? After looking at Mosso's homepage, I wasn't sure myself. There are two options that seemed to fit what I was looking to do: Cloud Sites and Cloud Servers. The Cloud Sites started at $100/mo and Cloud Servers at $11/mo, but I couldn't figure out the difference despite the fact that the price discrepancy was screaming that there was one. I started a live support session and within the minute was asking about the two server plans. The rep told me that Cloud Sites support unlimited domains and the applications and stuff are managed by Mosso while the Cloud Servers can support unlimited domains, but everything is managed by the user. I was then prompted to ask, "Wait, so I pay less to have more control over my server?" The answer was yes!
Apparently nobody wants to have to configure their own servers, so the normal prices of dedicated or virtually dedicated servers is inflated to maintain security and things. Sure, I'd love to pay someone to do that stuff for me, but 10x the cost is too much for a broke grad student. Needless to say, I signed up on the spot, configured my server the next day, and now have my very own dedicated server! The "catch" is they charge me separately for bandwidth; a whopping $0.2 per GB!
